Preparing for Holiday Travel

Nov 6, 2019 | New Garage Doors

As we approach the holiday season, the last thing you may be thinking about is garage door installation. You’re probably worried about how you’re going to prepare your home before you leave on that holiday trip to see the relatives. Put your mind at ease and use some of the tips we have for you in this piece while you prepare to go on vacation.

Outdoor Tips

The first thing you’ll want to do is to walk around your property to check for any vulnerabilities. A loose fence panel or broken roof shingle may not be issues when you’re home to address problems immediately, but they can cause significant trouble when you’re gone. Make sure to fix any hazards that you find before you leave.

In Phoenix, you probably don’t worry too much about your pipes freezing while you’re away, but it’s still a problem your home could face. Make sure that any exposed pipes are properly insulated to prevent a considerable disaster while you’re gone. If you’re in an older home, you may also want to have your systems inspected so you know if anything needs replaced ahead of time.

It’s rather common for the valley to deal with winter storms that take down large trees and do damage to our homes, so what can you do to minimize any damage? Make sure to remove dead trees from your property, so you don’t risk one caving in your roof or garage door.

Removing dead trees and heavy, low-hanging branches is especially essential if you have recently had a garage door installation project done, so it doesn’t need redoing upon your return home.

Lastly, make sure that you check your yard and patio for anything that can be blown away if there are heavy winds. If you can’t bring them into your garage, make sure to secure things like grills, patio furniture, yard décor, and anything lightweight. Make sure to clean your gutters, ensuring they drain rainwater away from your property.

Indoor Tips

Two great tips for preparing the inside of your home are to make sure you clean out your fridge and leave on a light. By cleaning out your fridge of any food that will expire while you’re gone even if it’s two days to a couple of weeks, prevents you from coming home to spoiled food. You will also want to wipe down any surfaces in your fridge that have spills so that they don’t promote mold growth.

Leaving a light on or putting a few on intermittent timers makes your home look lived in and reduces the likelihood of a break-in. Motion-activated floodlights help with this, along with asking a trusted neighbor to park in your driveway from time to time. If you are one of the homes in the valley with grass in their front yard, hire someone to keep it trimmed if you are leaving for more than a few days.
